Good food.

It rained all day today again. I was just going to laze at home until Jason knocked on my door (with me still in my pyjamas) and invited me to the markets. I love markets! We walked up to the marché des capucins, which are just indoor fresh food markets. I'd been there before to buy sausages on my first night, but apparently, it's at its absolute best on Fridays and weekends. I ended up with some fresh cheese ravioli (which looks so good I don't want to cook it) and some dried pineapple, kiwi fruit and papaya to snack on. Jason ended up with much more (anchovies, olives, etc). But we both somehow bought cotton plants haha (plants that are already dead so we can't kill them), but they look really cool. And we ate these amazing I don't even know what they were. Almost like a nutella (but more hazelnutty) in a thick (not puffy) pastry. I'm going again tomorrow to get more.

We then worked our way into the centre of town for more markets at Saint-Michel. We were looking for more clothing/antique markets, but more were only fresh fruit and vege and as it was raining and afternoon, a lot of them didn't have all of their produce out/were starting to pack up. We bought new umbrellas instead as my travel one had broken :(
BUT as we were walking into town, we passed 3 guys (good looking) and I overheard Australian accents. In my excitement, I said wayyy too loudly "Australians" to Jason. They heard me and turned around and we chatted for a little. They're over here playing rugby for the year, and have already been here for 6 months and will go back home in August. They're from all over Australia, but one was from Wollongong! How cool is that?! We later ran into them again on rue Saint-Catherine. I was so excited! haha
In town, I bought my first macaroons (and a selection of other chocolate treats, which I then hastily gobbled down before I'd even got home)! There was some sort of gay pride protest going on across the road too. At the moment, french parliament is debating whether to pass gay marriage laws. It was completely different to an Australian protest. No one was really dressed up at all, and people weren't yelling/being loud. In fact, I wasn't even sure if they were all there for the protest or just standing around and happening to be in the middle of the protest. Even the loud speaker guy was really polite. But there were HEAPS of police. I didn't even know Bordeaux had that many police, surely it must have been their entire force. They were really lax too though, just hanging around, joking with everyone and smoking.

When I got home in the afternoon, I realised I didn't pick up slippers. We have wooden floors in the apartment and with people constantly going in and out, they get quite dirty/fluffly/dusty. I've just been wearing socks around, but it's starting to ruin the bottoms of them and when I sit on my bed, the dust on the bottom gets all over it. Zarahome was the place to go, so I went back out and picked up a pair and ended up just wandering for a bit.
When I got home, I didn't feel like cooking ravioli, so I put some vegetable pie/potato thing I had bought at the markets in the oven and just had that. They cook these massive quiches and you just buy slices of them. It was delish!
While I ate Leah and I chatted. She's so lovely!! We're going to have a joint crémaillère (house warming party) soon!

  1. Hi Amelia - love reading about your adventures and new experiences. It sounds like so much fun. Very surprised that the French sell bedspreads with the Union Jack on it. Bet they don't have a town square called Trafalgar!!Stay safe xx
PS Enjoying Nipper's comments too - such a clever dog :)

  2. Thanks Penny :)
Haha I know! The union jack was the last one there and it was one a shelf of its own. Probably wanting to get rid of it!
